  • How it works?

    Starfish water purification units are constructed in a modular manner with a number of reactor chambers which utilize an alternating combination of Ozonation, UV sanitation and Advanced Oxidation ratios to clean, sanitize and purify water.


    • Starfish technology can be utilized across all size requirements from small water users to large municipal applications.

    • The system in not pressurized and can operate under gravity flows if required.

    • Water flows against a bubble stream of high density ozone in combination with UV sanitation and Advanced Oxidation in alternating ratios and flow rates.

    • The system uniquely produces it's own ozone with the capability to produce 80-120 grams of ozone per litre of water depending on the quality of the source water.

    • The un-depleted ozone is reverted back to oxygen automatically within the system.

    • The UV produced within the system utilizes a specific wavelength of UV light which maximizes the sanitation and disinfection rates.

    • This unique combination of ozone and UV light kills bacteria and pathogens, clarifies and oxygenates the water and removes odour.

  • What is Ozone?

    • Ozone (O3), is a highly unstable gas and strong oxidant. It is corrosive, non toxic and has a strong odour.

    The Science of Ozone 

    • Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent and highly unstable at high concentrations, decaying to a regular O2 molecule. Once decayed, it releases an active O atom. This Oxygen atom is very reactive and combines with other elements to make a stable molecule.

    Ozone Water Purification Applications 

    • Being a very strong disinfectant and oxidizer, ozone can disinfect materials via an oxidation process. Ozone is a stronger oxidizer than chlorine, a common water disinfection chemical. Moreover, ozone performs 3,000 times faster than Chlorine. Ozone is regarded as safe, cost-effective and chemical-free.

    • Over the years, ozone treatment systems have been used for purifying drinking water in various parts of the world.     Starfish Ozonation Chamber


    Starfish technology is a technological breakthrough (International patents and patents pending) method of Ozonation. The ozone-enriched water flows into a chamber to allow for sufficient contact time. During this contact time, ozone molecules decay to form oxygen molecules and free hydroxyl radicals. It is both the ozone and the highly reactive free radicals which oxidize organic molecules. Through this oxidation, toxic herbicides and pesticides are reduced to more environmentally friendly components.

    Non-biodegradable organics will reduce to smaller biodegradable parts. The reaction is capable of splitting proteins, carbohydrates and humic acids at double-bonded carbons to damage and destroy critical components of organisms found in the water. Since the free hydroxyl is so highly reactive, the contact time necessary is minimal, as compared to other disinfectants.

    The ozone destroys bacteria and other microorganisms through an infusion of ozone. Ozonation destroys Cryptosporidium, Legionella and other naturally-occurring organisms. It also can reduce the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs), which result from the interaction of chlorine and naturally-occurring organic material in the source water.

  • What is Ultraviolet Light Disinfection?

    • Ultraviolet disinfection is a means of killing or rendering harmless micro organisms in a dedicated environment. These micro organisms can range from bacteria and viruses to algae and protozoa.

    • UV disinfection is used in air and water purification, sewage treatment protection of food and beverages and many other disinfection and sterilization applications. A major advantage of UV treatment is that it is capable of disinfecting water faster than chlorine without cumbersome retention tanks and harmful chemicals. UV treatment systems are also extremely cost efficient.

    How does UV Disinfection Work

    • Ultraviolet is one energy region of the electromagnetic spectrum, which lies between the x-ray region and the visible region. UV itself lies in the ranges of 200 nanometers (nm) to 390 nanometers (nm). Optimum UV germicidal action occurs at 260 nm.

    • Since natural germicidal UV from the sun is screened out by the earth's atmosphere, we must look to alternative means of producing UV light. This is accomplished through the conversion of electrical energy in a low pressure mercury vapor "hard glass" quartz lamp. Electrons flow through the ionized mercury vapor between the electrodes of the lamp, which then creates UV light.

     Starfish Photoelectric Chamber 

    The photoelectric chamber utilizes Ultraviolet disinfection which consists of a purely physical, chemical-free process. UV attacks the vital DNA of the bacteria directly. The radiation initiates a photochemical reaction that destroys the genetic information contained in the DNA. The bacteria lose their reproductive capability and are destroyed. Even parasites such as Cryptosporidium or Giardia, which are extremely resistant to chemical disinfectants, are efficiently reduced. The microorganisms are eliminated from the water. The photoelectric chamber is also used to remove chlorine and chloramines in a process called Photolysis.

  • What is Advanced Oxidation?

    Advanced oxidation is a step in the advanced water treatment process that uses powerful oxidants and ultraviolet light to destroy trace levels of organic or micro biological organisms. Advanced Oxidation Processes (abbreviation: AOPs), refers to a set of  treatment procedures designed to remove organic and inorganic materials in waste water by oxidation.  The contaminant materials are converted to a large extent into stable inorganic compounds such as water, carbon dioxide and salts, i.e. they undergo mineralization.  The AOP procedure is particularly useful for cleaning biologically toxic or non-degradable materials such as aromatics, pesticides, petroleum constituents and volatile organic compounds in waste water.

    Starfish Advanced Oxidation

    The Advanced Oxidation chamber makes use of oxidants to reduce COD/BOD levels, and to remove both organic and oxidisable inorganic components. The process can completely oxidize organic materials to carbon dioxide and water. Oxidation of target contaminants are caused by direct reaction with the oxidizers, UV photolysis, and through the synergistic action of UV light, in combination with ozone (O3). UV-oxidation processes can be used to simultaneously destroy trace chemical contaminants and provide high-level disinfection. The combination of Ozone and UV in the single chamber provides the system with extended microbiological kill power and harmful chemical removal capability.

  • Starfish Optimized Fractionation

    Fractionation is an efficient, cost-effective way to remove small particles and dissolved organic wastes from water while at the same time increasing dissolved oxygen levels.


    Fractionation is mixing ozone, air and water together through the Starfish Optimized Fractionation process. As the bubbles travel through the chamber, they collect dissolved and small organic waste particles, on their bubble walls. These particles are then expelled from the system through the fractionation discharge as waste. The combined advanced processes within the Starfish system ensure that even the waste is pathogen free.


  • Starfish Pre-filtration Media

    Starfish Ion Exchange Media (SIEM)

    Unlike other filter media, SIEM binds and removes nutrients such as ammonia and nitrogen based compounds. These are a common cause of bad taste in water. SIEM will also remove and control malodorous volatiles (odours). SIEM will remove metal ions including, but not limited to heavy metals; cadmium, selenium, mercury, barium, chromium, caesium, lead, copper and other elements such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Further, the removal of metal ions improves the softness of the water and gets rid of stains from iron and manganese. SIEM has a unique ability to absorb a range of pollutant organic molecules present in some water sources.This ability results from its unique surface structure and surface electrical charge.

    Starfish Activated Carbon Media (SACM)

    SACM is a unique product that supports and compliments other technological processes within the Starfish System. The main advantage of SACM over other filter media is that it produces a cleaner, safer, higher quality water. SACM works in two ways through the processes of adsorption and absorption. The combination of these two processes enables SACM to extract a wide range of substances both organic and non organic. As one of the world’s most powerful adsorbents, SACM can assist in the removal of these specific contaminants or play a role as part of a multistage approach.
